About Paris

Paris is the capital of France and hosts the most important institutions of the French political system as well as many European and international organisations such as the UNESCO, OECD and BIPM. Paris and its suburbs are also a major centre for academic research with sixteen different universities, covering all topics in Natural and Social Sciences, and many famous research institutes such as the Sorbonne and the French Academy of Sciences.

Beyond its economic, scientific and political importance, the city is also known worldwide as a place of culture with hundreds of art galleries, more than 130 theatres and museums, and around 100 entertainment venues. As part of French culture, the city also offers a large variety of restaurants from the typical French bistro to Michelin starred restaurants.

The city is easy to explore using the well-developed public transportation system. The Metro, the Paris subway, is one of the densest in the world with a station every 600 m on average. Alternatively, more than 60 bus lines are available within Paris. Finally, the use of the electric bike service has become quite popular in recent years.

More information on the city can be found on the official Paris Tourist Office website as well as the on the Paris public transportation website.
